In this digital world we are always looking for the next best way to do our job or maximise our time. Whether it’s an app that places food on the table when you have just finished a virtual bike ride through the peak district, or unlimited lessons on any subject on free video channels streamed to your hand-held device, there is no limit to how far we can take it.
The construction industry is no different, digital solutions can drive efficiency in output, cost and most importantly health and safety. Within estimating is there are multiple digital solutions from estimating software (within built measuring capability) to benchmark rate apps.
After the review of the client's design, drawings etc you must then quantify the project and put it into a structured document or take off. There are lots of take-off tools available should you decide to go down a digital route. If you are doing the take-off manually then use a dimension (dim) sheet.
Dependent on the discipline and client you may need to use a method of measurement. We would recommend this every time, this gives you structure, consistency, and clarity for project delivery.
This is where you get to know your project.
The detail, the project specifics, the usual stuff, the challenges, the risks! Have confidence going forward.
Get lost in a take off! It can be therapeutic.
It's where the work starts. By taking the time and effort to structure and quantify your project you become the project expert and the benefits are crucial to the project team.
Sets an accurate baseline for the project.
Its a great check against the programme/schedule.
Helps with accurate procurement of materials.
Helps with defining requirements for temporary works.
Reduces risk both for both commercial and construction.
These are just some of the benefits of taking your time to quantify your project in a structured, disciplined manner.
We would recommend that practice makes perfect but also, should your organisation use a digital solution you must be able to check and challenge what the output is giving you.
